Proposed tree replacement program - community poll
Council is currently seeking community feedback on replacement tree species for the High Street component of Koroit Township Renewal Stage 3.
The current planting of Metrosideros excelsa (New Zealand Christmas Trees) - between Commercial Road and the Mill Street area on both sides of the road will be removed. No other tree species will be removed as part of the works. The New Zealand Christmas Trees are being removed due to the following factors:
- Construction requirements for upgrades to the drainage network and road works
- The age and condition of these trees with a number showing senescence - ageing of the tree with a decline in function and vitality.
- Impacts of the current root system on the drainage network and road condition both current and future.
- Height of the trees that will require significant lopping to meet safety requirements associated with overhead powerlines.
Replacement trees will be planted within the same locality of the current trees and formalised garden areas will be retained. Planned tree removal will occur late October.
Council is proposing to plant one of the following species to maintain the current avenue presentation and is seeking resident feedback on a preferred species. Replacement tree work will include the installation of root barrier and irrigation.
- Cercis chinensis - Chinese Redbud - Faerie Queen
- Acer palmatum - Japanese Maple
- Eucalyptus lansdowneana ssp albopurpurea - Purple Patch
- Lagerstroemia indica - Crepe myrtle
More details on the proposed species are provided in the 'Proposed tree species summary September 2025' in the High Street works section.
You can vote for your preferred species by either:
Voting will close on 10am, Monday 13 October. Results will be published online.

Commercial Road footpath works to get underway - Monday 6 October.
Council is expecting footpath works to commence for Commercial Road Koroit on Monday 6 October with the project covering the southern side of Commercial Road from High St (Mickey Bourke's) to Commercial Place (Koroit Theatre).
The first phase of works will start at the end of Mickey Bourke's building in High Street and work towards Commercial Road before paving work along the frontage of Mickey Bourke's gets underway. Traffic and pedestrian management controls will be put in place as works require, and all vehicles and pedestrians must follow directions and signage.
During the High Street works phase, patrons to Mickey Bourke's will be able to enter off Commercial Road. Please note - there will be no parking available along the High Street areas of the works. Once works commence along the Commercial Road frontage of Mickey Bourke's, patrons will be able to enter off High Street.
Phase 1 works will take until early to mid-December to complete and streetscape works will then pause for the summer school holidays.
Phase 2 works will then start at the Koroit Theatre area in early February 2026.
Council PMO officers will be regularly on site to oversee works and liaise with business owners, residents and visitors. Business owners, residents and visitors can also contact Council via email - pmo@moyne.vic.gov.au or via phone 1300 65 65 64.
Landscape design plans for all the works completed and proposed for Commercial Road are available in the documents section of this project page.
Questions relating to the project can also be posted through Q&A section on this project page.
