Contractors have completed repair works to 18 piles on the Gipps Street Bridge that were in poor condition and required the recent lane reduction and weight limits to be put in place.
Engineers have assessed the works and have advised that the Bridge can return to two-lane traffic and the 15 tonne weight limit. The 20km speed limit must remain in place to help minimise further deterioration to the bridge.
The Bridge will be opened to two-lane traffic and 15 tonne vehicles from midday Friday 21 November 2025.
One-lane traffic will need to be put in place again temporarily in early December to allow for geotechnical assessment of the riverbed and sub-surface ground conditions.
This geotechnical report is required for the new bridge Design and Construct tender and design planning as it will inform the engineering design for new bridge piers.
The one-lane closure is required as drilling equipment will need to operate from the bridge deck. It is anticipated that this will take 5 working days to complete, with a current proposed commencement date of Monday 1 December 2025.
We will let the community know if this start date changes.
Once the geotechnical assessments are completed, the bridge should return to two-lane traffic.
