- Local laws expire after 10 years and this timeframe cannot be extended.
- Proposed local laws must be advertised to give people an opportunity to comment in accordance with the Council’s Community Engagement Policy.
- A copy of proposed local laws must be available at Council offices and on its website.
- Local laws must not be inconsistent with any Acts or regulations including the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.
- Council must obtain a certificate from a lawyer stating that the proposed local law is consistent with the requirements of section 72 of the LGA.
- Public notice of two weeks is sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the Community Engagement Policy;
- The proposed local law is not inconsistent with any Act or regulations; and
- The proposed local law is consistent with the local law requirements of section 72 of the LGA.

What are the proposed changes?
We have undertaken a review and proposed changes that remove some irrelevant or inconsistent provisions, clarify wording where required and we have updated references to Acts and standards where appropriate.
These changes are made to meet the requirements of the LGA.

What happens with my submission?
Council will consider any submissions made in response to the public notice.
If any further review of the local laws proposes more significant changes, a consultation process that is consistent with the extent of the changes will be undertaken.
