Council plays a key leadership role in promoting responsible pet ownership, community safety and healthy living through an informed community.

In line with the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (Act), Council has adopted Domestic Animal Management Plans in 2008, 2013, 2017 and 2021. Each plan sets a structured approach to animal management and service delivery over a 4‑year period.

This latest plan builds on previous work and will guide actions through to 2029. It outlines Council’s strategic direction, objectives and framework for managing animals, with a focus on responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Over the past 4 years, Council has worked on operational efficiency and is in the process of streamlining processes while transitioning to a new Electronic Records Management System. In the next 4 years, the focus will shift to more aspirational strategies that directly support responsible pet ownership and enhance the health and wellbeing of both domestic animals and the community.

Feedback closes 10am Monday 19 October 2026.
